Did you know there are over 1.5 billion websites on the internet? The truth is, that’s just the figure today when writing this post; new websites are created every day.

These websites can fall under many different categories like e-commerce, social media, magazines, directories, portfolios, and more. 

One of the significant contributors to many web pages is blogs. In 2021, around 600 million blogs made up the bulk of the internet, and today it’s a lot more. 

Pretty huge, right? 

To be honest, blogs are pretty epic websites with a dual purpose for some. If you have your blog, you can make a lot of dollars from internet users. Whereas for readers, it can be an excellent form of entertainment to read on the go. 

However, if you have your blog or business blog, you might have come into contact clashing with tech, wondering if blogs stay relevant today. 

But, as many personal blogs and blog posts are on the rise, it can often raise the question if blogs stay relevant in today’s times. To help dissect this topic, today I’m going to cover all the things you need to know about the future of blogging. By the end of this article, you’ll know if blogs are still relevant or not. 

What is a blog? 

First things first.

Before I fully jump right into the get-go about blog posts, blog content, free domain, and blog traffic, you need to know what one is first.

A blog is a form of website that produces insightful content on a website. The information on the blog is normally displayed in reverse chronological order. Typically it shows information where the latest posts come first and at the top of the page. 

The content on the blog comes under the topic of posts and is usually conversationally orientated. It’s less like a science report and more like a website designed to trigger thoughts to provoke it. 

Blogs can often be a part of a website or a whole website entirely. 

What is the purpose of a blog? 

Think of blogs like food. Many different types exist, which all have different flavors and match people’s preferences. 

But, just like food, there’s only really one or two main purposes people use for having blogs. One is business blogging; the other is for personal projects. In particular, the business aspects help generate revenue and passing income. 

Moreover, they help your website rank higher in Google and search engines, increasing your brand’s visibility. Therefore greater visibility might increase visitors, leading to conversions and more profits.

Basically, for businesses, blogging is pretty damn essential to increase your blog traffic and business leads. It’s all about building that connection with your customers and potential audience. Credibility is critical in blogging to make you look good and build trust in others.

Now, when it comes to personal blogging, it’s pretty simple. 

Their purpose is to create remarkable content that educates others on a single subject or raises your brand’s presence. One person usually writes these blogs, covering their views on their thoughts, ideas, and information regarding their personal experience. 

If you’re more of the informal type of writer, personal blogs are probably the way to go.

Ok, when looking at the blogging platform, you might be confused. I know I just covered the two main categories: business and personal. But there’s a lot more that’s in between the two. To give you an idea, here are some niches they can fall under:

Fashion blogs

If you’re thinking about setting up a fashion blog, you need to prepare yourself. This niche is one of the most popular ones on the internet. Because of this, the competition is very high, and you have to stand out to look like an expert on this topic and gain enough traffic.

Lifestyle blogs

These blogs cover many topics spanning from nutrition, workouts, wellness, productivity, and more. If you have a lot to talk about that does not fall into one specific category, this might be your vibe. 

Travel blogs

If you’re a jet setter or active traveler, then this niche is a fun one to be in. However, just like fashion, it can be quite a saturated market, making it tough to rank. Running a travel blog can take many hours of research, content, and curation to really connect with your readers. 

Food blogs

Who can’t survive without food? I definitely can’t.  

Many professional bloggers are covering the topic of food. Some blogs cover recipes and ingredient buying, and others make it generic about food. There’s a lot of money involved in food blogging, and it can be a pretty enticing avenue. 

Affiliate/review blogs 

Are you familiar with affiliates?

Basically, these blogs make a cracking bit of money. Think of it this way.

Over 80% of brands and counting have affiliate programs. People who add their affiliates to their websites can make quite a few bucks. 

These types of blogs cover more so evaluation of certain services, products, and more in a typical market. Often these evaluations are niche-based or broader ones. The affiliate and review blogs cover general pros, cons, pricing structure, and general value. 

The marketing channels and brands typically bring money. Brands pay you to market and review your products. But, do note it takes some time to get a reputation and credit to reach this level. 

Multimedia blogs

If you want to write for more visual learners, you might want to cover the topic of multimedia blogs. These blogs cover more visual content such as videos, infographics, and storytelling. 

If you have an inner creative side, you may want to give this a go. It’s the best type of visual blog that can exist on the internet. 

News blogs 

Ok, so news blogs are pretty much what it says in the name. They tell the news, duh. Typically, they focus on all the latest plans, releases, happenings, and more for a particular market. 

If you do not want to share your opinion and go for more fact-related content, then having a news blog can be quite a safe bet. This type of content covers information about personal stories and subjective topics. 

How to start a blog 

Now, if you’re really wanting to cause some conversations going online, then you best get started with your own blog. But to even do this, you must know how to start blogging first. 

So, let’s cut to the chase and learn these steps.

So what’s first?

Start with your name. 

Before you even get into the blogging rhythm, you have to have an identity first. There’s no point in having a blog if there’s no relevant name. 

It’s also good to note that blog names are also called domain names.

If you’ve already got a name for it, you can check online to see if it’s already registered here. It’s also important to note that there cannot be punctuation or spaces in your domain name when registering. Moreover, if you feel that name is taken, you might want to do the following:

  • Use an alternative extension: If you find the .com version of your domain is not in use, then there are other options you can use, like .net or .org. 
  • Include small words: If you like the name of your domain and don’t want to change it too much, you might want to try adding small words like the, my, or best.
  • Add dashes: You can also add dashes between your domain name, for instance, Steve-Yonder.com. 

Are you stuck for ideas? 

I get it; it can be pretty tough to choose an epic blog name. Try drawing on your inspiration and using ideas from life experiences, personal stories, hobbies, passions, interests, etc. You never know; a brainstorming session with these could allow you to create some pretty nifty names for your blog.

Most bloggers who do well tend to have a pretty creative domain name that’s descriptive and relevant to their niche.

You might want to follow a typical blog post format if you’re new to writing. However, the best way is to start writing, get it out there, and refine it. 

Remember to write for humans.

When producing cool and cutting-edge content, it’s important to remember that it should be engaging and conversational.

  •  New blog post titles: Try and ensure your blogs are cutting edge and different from the other typical types of blog posts. You’ll want to create an intriguing title that hooks readers and makes them want to know more.
  • Vary the format: Have you ever looked at a lot of information and been discouraged from reading it? Like your own experience, readers don’t want to read the text in blog posts in clumps. So, you should break it down into a few lines at a time. Add headings, subheadings, quotes, and images to break it up.
  • Don’t be a copycat: When you create content, be original. Don’t copy other people’s posts. No one likes plagiarism, and you certainly don’t want to be sued either. 
  • Add some visual images: Some people love visual representations more than text. Because of this, it’s always best to include some nice photos, either your own or from a stock photo website
  • Edit: You should edit all your blog posts before they go live. Nothing screams unprofessional like many grammar and typo errors.

Writing and publishing your posts is just the beginning, my friend. 

Once your content is created, you’ll want to make people aware of it. 

Until your search traffic builds up from SEO, you should aim to promote it within your inner circle.

Then from there, you should share it on social media outlets. For this, you should create accounts on social media under your blog name. Once you start posting on social media, it’ll be fun as people can share your content, and you can generate more views.

Another and the most important way to do this is through link building. Reach out for Guest posts and makes sure to get a do-follow link. Writing guest posts on websites with higher DR ratings will increase the Authority of your website, it is the best and the safest way to do so. Make sure to get a “do-follow” link and not a “no-follow” link.

You can also comment on other people’s blogs and generate more attention for your own. Try to ensure the comments are engaging, constructive, and insightful to gain enough interest for visitors to your blog posts. While it’s certainly not the most effective way, it can still generate traffic.

To drill it into your head a little bit more, consider a few things when blogging. Typically you need the following to get your blog up and running:

If you’re not familiar with blog hosting, it’s a web server that helps your blog stay online or live. A host helps with the large amounts of storage your blog consumes online such as files, data, and code in your server. 

My personal favorite is WPX hosting but it’s much pricier than the rest but well worth it. If you are serious about blogging and can play around with a budget, I’d suggest WPX hosting.

To be honest, if you don’t have a host, your blog won’t be able to exist to be viewed by anyone by the public. 

You can use a range of hosts, but some of the best ones are HostGator, Bluehost, InMotion, GoDaddy, and SquareSpace

Content Management System

To have a real successful blog, you got to have a content management system (CMS). To be honest, it’s pretty impossible to have one without.

The truth is, the system isn’t as technical as you think. 

It’s practically software that helps you create, manage and alter content on your blog. A CMS system is pretty epic as it removes technical troubles.

No technical knowledge is required here.

Still confused about what one is?

Just think of a CMS as a tool that helps you build your blog without writing code from scratch. 

Out of the CMS systems that exist, there are mainly two types you can use that are best for a blog, which are:

WordPress

Arguably, WordPress is the most popular of all the popular CMS systems. Many bloggers and businesses use WordPress as it’s easy to use. It also has a lot of plugins and features and is one of the easiest systems to help publish content. This CMS is open source, meaning many people contribute to the code, with little glitches in the software. WordPress is also easy to install and easy to use. 

Joomla

Another popular alternative to WordPress is Joomla, which is great for storing and publishing content. This CMS has over 20 awards, many organizations, and websites. When creating content on Joomla, it’s easy to customize, extend and publish content. 

Page Builder

While you can certainly build your website without any coding using a content management system such as WordPress, it would be a good investment to get a page builder. It is essentially a drag and website builder with tons of advanced features and themes that come with it. Two of the most popular page builders are Kadence and Elementor, both are equally good and come down to preferences.

I personally use Kadence because it was suggested by a couple of guys I was learning blogging from. Try to test both and see what you like the most because it’s a lot of features and options to play with.

Basic knowledge of SEO 

It can be beneficial to have a baseline knowledge of content marketing and search engine optimization (SEO). While it might seem like adjusting a blog to you, you still have to make it rank. 

You might be able to let the content speak for itself, but how will people get onto your page?

Therefore doing SEO research firsthand and implementing keywords into your text can help it appear higher up in the search results. Similarly, you might want to add tools to your blogs like Ahrefs, SurferSeo, or Semrush to guide you through SEO.

If you want to be a successful blogger or even have a chance at that, SEO tools are essential.

Whether you are starting a personal blog or a blog for your company having a keyword tool for your SEO optimization is essential. Keywords are what we are trying to rank for in hopes of coming up on page 1 in google searches.

This is exactly why it is important to have a tool that can help you with it.

You can use the editor in Surfer to write your connect or you can integrate it with WordPress and google docs. I personally like to use google docs, it’s more comfortable and always autosaves.

What should you be aware of when starting a blog?

Well, pretty much many other bloggers alongside have wished they had a lot of wisdom sent to them in their early days.

The truth is, blogging is not an overnight process or a get-rich-quick scheme. It takes time to write compelling results, impact readers’ daily lives, rank on the first page, and provide solutions for them.

But, while the tricks of the trade are constantly changing, here are some snippets of wisdom that might be useful for you:

A lot of effort is required. 

Don’t be tricked into thinking your blog is going to be great. It takes a lot of grit and determination to get it kick-started. 

Just think about the research, type of content, writing, photos, editing, and publishing. This takes a lot of time and effort.

So be patient with yourself.

It can take several months to start establishing a presence online. 

Know your niche

Did you know blogging is not a get rich quick scheme? It’s pretty damn hard.

Millions of blogs exist on the internet, and the only way to create hype is to scream out loud about your differences.

It’s a central point that helps you identify who your main reader base is. Knowing your niche helps you target your readers better. 

If you’re unsure of your niche or user intent, you’ll want to consider all the topics you’re knowledgeable on.

For the vast majority of these blogs, you’ll want to categorize them.

Once you have a common category, you can decide on your niche.

You have to be active on social media.

To survive as a blogger in this day and age, you have to have a strong presence on social media platforms. 

So if going off the grid, having a digital detox is your thing; you should not blog, period.

The future of blogging relies on expanding your network and audience through likes, shares, and follows online.

To save you time, you might want to have a social media strategy for Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, etc. 

It’s a constant learning process. 

You should treat your blog like an online business; it’s a continuous learning process.

You have to innovate, or you die.

All bloggers must have a strong understanding of the traditional market, SEO, and analytics to thrive in the blogging world. Plus, you have to keep checking new tricks to the trade, as the algorithms are regularly changing from search engines.

There’s no A-B recipe to succeed in blogging; everyone’s growth takes a different path. But given that, there are a few tips and tricks to gain more traffic on your blog. Check these out: 

Branded email address

Every other website you visit nowadays is a blog. Let’s face it; blogging is a pretty damn tough industry. It can also be difficult to infuse trust in your readers, especially as many people now repurpose content, and it often lacks credibility. To establish more trust and credibility, you’ll want to create a branded email address. Ideally, you should create one with your blog name attached to it.

Build an email list

One of the best strategies to keep your targeted audience in the loop with your posts is by having a mailing list. They’re essential to your views as they help nurture your existing relationships. 

After all, emails are more powerful than status updates on social media.

They stay in someone’s inbox until deleted, serving as a constant reminder. 

Videos 

For content to be king, it needs to have a mix. Video content can help you increase your click-through rate on search engines like Google, as often a thumbnail clip will be shown, standing out from the typical text.

Sometimes you can hit a wall with content.

In today’s world, everyone relies on trust. Because of this, many companies use bloggers and influencers to write posts related to their products. Often these posts are paid. Therefore one option is to contact your favorite brands and ask if you can promote their products.

If your blog gets big and becomes an overnight success, you can churn your content into merch. One way of doing this is using a print-on-demand service and creating t-shirts, mugs, and bags. Print on demand is efficient as you don’t need to pay money for storage, manufacturing, or inventory costs.

That means you have to stay on top of content marketing, know trends in the industry, be familiar with google algorithms, be active, and ensure your blogs are relevant to users.
